The hike to the Yellowstone River Overlook is a short but steep descent past Tower Falls into the lower Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The moderate hike drops over 300 feet over the course of 0.3 miles. With most people stopping at Tower Falls, the extra bit of trail is a nice way to get a break from the crowds and enjoy the picturesque scenery of the canyon.
Tower Falls and Yellowstone River Overlook Trail Description
From the parking area, head down the paved trail that guides you to the Tower Falls Overlook over the course of 0.1 miles. The overlook provides a stunning view of Tower Falls crashing into the forest below. Once you’ve enjoyed the view of the falls, look for the trail to continue behind you.
The trail from here is a more traditional single-track dirt trail. You’ll descend at a rapid rate, making switchbacks down the steep hillside. You’ll also notice the park has gone to great effort to prevent people from shortcutting the trail, which tramples and kills vegetation while also unnaturally eroding the hillside quicker. Please remember to stay on the trail since the shortcutting doesn’t really save you any time or energy anyway.
Once at the bottom, you’re treated to a stunning overlook looking up and down the Yellowstone River. A large yellow cliff rises to the left, stained by sulfur. To the right, an unmaintained trail continues down to the shore. Watch your footing if you continue. The dirt can be loose where it gets significantly steeper. When ready, head back out the same way you came in.
