Observation Point Loop

Distance: 1.6 miles
Type: Loop
Difficulty: Easy

Kid-friendly: Yes
Dog-friendly: No
Water: No

Rising above Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park is the Observation Point overlook. While this makes for a great quick hike for a different vantage point, it can be easily incorporated into an easy loop that includes more geysers and scenery. It’s great way to experience the Upper Geyser Basin, even offering the potential for more for those with a bit more time. Likewise, if you have time before the next Old Faithful eruption, consider doing this loop clockwise for an easier ascent.

Observation Loop Trail Description

From Old Faithful, head to the opposite side of the iconic geyser as the Old Faithful Inn. Follow a trail that forks off descending toward the Firehole River. On the opposite side of the river, look for the Observation Point Trailhead branching off to the right.

As you begin ascending the trail, you’ll find yourself in a peaceful forest. Climbing steadily through the woods, you’ll reach a junction closer to the top. Left will bring you to Solitary Geyser, while right continues up to Observation Point. For now, head right to continue the ascent.

Old Faithful Erupting Below Observation Point

The trail wraps up a switchback to Observation Point where you’re treated to beautiful views of Old Faithful and the surrounding landscape. As you wait for the eruption, you’re able to make out other features of the Upper Geyser Basin below. Once you’ve enjoyed an Old Faithful eruption, head back down to the prior junction. This can be accessed by heading in either direction. A short loop wraps around Observation Point.

Back at the junction for Solitary Geyser, head right to begin easily descending through the tranquil forest. You’ll make a small ascent as Solitary Geyser comes into view. The wide geyser’s eruptions might seem a little anticlimactic after Old Faithful, but the solitude of the setting via the clearing in the forest make it an inviting spot to sit and relax. The eruptions occur every 5-7 minutes, but don’t tend to do much more then bubble aggressively at the surface. And still, there’s something calming about the whole experience. When ready, continue down the trail.

Beginning to descend through the woods, you’ll make your way down to Geyser Hill, a small hill filled with geysers rising slightly above the rest of the geyser basin. At the junction with Geyser Hill, you’re welcome to either head right or left. Left is the most direct route if you’re short on time. However, if you’d prefer to see more features, head right.

Bending around Geyser Hill, you’ll soon reach another junction. If you’re interested in seeing other features, such as Grand Geyser, Grotto Geyser, or even Morning Glory Pool, head right to begin heading in that direction. If you’d rather close out the loop, stay on the loop for Geyser Hill. Along the way you’ll pass Beehive Geyser, which erupts even taller than Old Faithful.

The loop ends on the opposite side where you can close out the loop and head back up toward the main Old Faithful area.
