The Divide Trail is a short but strenuous 1.8 mile trek up through a pristine forest in Yellowstone National Park. With no significant landmark or view at the trail’s terminus, the trail is a more intimate view of the surrounding woods, offering fleeting glimpses of the surrounding landscapes.
Divide Trail Description
From the trailhead, the Divide Trail drops into the woods, crossing Spring Creek, then beginning a steady ascent from there. At 0.25 miles in, you’ll reach a discrete junction. Right will bring you toward Lone Star Geyser, while continuing straight will maintain your route along the trail.
Shortly after the junction, you’ll cross a ridgeline, followed by a small creek on the left for a brief moment. As you ascend higher, you’ll notice hills rising above you on either side. Continuing the climb for another mile, you’ll reach a small saddle among the hills. Through the trees, Shoshone Lake can be clearly made out far below.
Continuing to climb, you’ll wrap around another hill, ultimately reaching the terminus on top of the forested hill. (As of this writing), a creatively propped up trio of sticks marks the end of the trail. Enjoy the peacefulness as long as you’d like, and when ready, head back out the way you came in.
Getting There
From Old Faithful, head south along the Grand Loop Road for 6.9 miles. Passing Scaup Lake on the left, look for the trailhead on your right shortly after.
