With short access to reach the views, it makes for a great escape even after a day of work.

Hook Mountain Trail Description

From the small parking space along the highway, head up either yellow trail. Both will connect a short distance ahead. A steep trail ascends into the high canopy forest, where it will soon ease on the steepness, but not so much the ascent. As the highway noise slowly fades away, leaving the sounds of the woods to become the most audible sounds, the trail will maintain a gradual climb up to a fantastic overlook.

You’ll soon arrive at an ancient talus field, where the trail forks in two directions. Follow it left and continue ascending toward a grassy crest. Just above the crest awaits a panoramic view of the Hudson River and many of its features.

A sprawling view to the south reveals distant hills and mountains fading into the horizon, while closer in, the Tappan Zee Bridge spans across the Hudson River from Nyack to Tarrytown. Beyond a thin floor of shallow trees, a far reaching view northward stretches out toward Bear Mountain as the Hudson River slithers through the landscape.

Fall Colors on Forest Floor

As part of the Long Path, this trail will continue along the crest of the Palisades, popping out at various overlooks to offer outstanding views high above the Hudson River for the next few miles. Continue as far as you’re comfortable, and head back the same way you came in.

Getting to the Hook Mountain Trailhead

From Main St. in Nyack, head north on 9W for 2 miles. Look for the trailhead in a parking area on the east (right) side of the road as you come down the hill.
