Ribbon Lake via Clear Lake Trail Description
The trail begins at the Wapiti Lake Trailhead, and heads east through a small forest grove as it begins to climb up a hill. The hill flattens out soon enough where you’re treated to a vast open expanse with the Hayden Valley soon coming into view to the south. At 0.5 miles in, you’ll reach a junction with the Wapiti Lake Trail. Stay left to continue toward the lakes.
Beyond the junction you begin climbing another hill, increasingly dramatic view awaiting as you ascend higher. As you descend from the top, a thin forest thickens as you make your way down to Clear Lake.

The dazzling blue-green water of the lake comes with the odor of sulfur from the nearby geyser basin that you’re about to wander through. Passing by the lake’s southern shore, you quickly reach the first thermal feature, a mud pot bubbling as you veer away from the lake.
Just beyond the lake and the initial mud pot, the landscape changes dramatically to a sulfur-stained rocky landscape surrounded by the forest. While you’ll see a hot spring or two, the features along the trail are dominated by mud pots, some larger than others.
As you wind through the thermal area, remember to stay on the trail as it’s outlined by natural markings. The ground can be unstable in these areas, and the potential to break through the crust and get scalded by steam is very real.

On the other end of the thermal area, you’ll enter the full forest once again, where you’ll immediately reach another junction at 1.9 miles in. Stay right to continue to Ribbon Lake.
The next 1+ mile is a straight shot through tranquil old woods as you wander through the serenity toward Ribbon Lake. At 3 miles in, you’ll reach a junction after making a steep descent to Ribbon Lake. The gorgeous lake breaks up the forest, providing a peaceful destination.
Staying left at the junction, the trail meanders a bit farther to a beautiful view of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. While you can hear the Silver Cord Cascade pouring down the cliffs into the canyon, views of the waterfall are difficult to attain. When ready, head back out the same way you came in.
