The hike up to Sunrise and Sunset Rocks is a moderately easy 1.75 mile round-trip trail climbing to the top of a small mountain, the summit of which offers two distinct views. Located within the small town of Highlands, North Carolina, it makes for a quick and easy escape for both locals and visitors.
Sunrise and Sunset Rocks Trail Description
From the small trailhead, follow the dirt road trail up through the serene forest as it twists and turns upward. The trail is very easy to follow as it ascends through a scenic deciduous forest along the dirt road. At 0.75 miles in, you’ll reach the junction that splits between Sunset and Sunrise Rocks. Head right to access Sunset Rock first.
A quick and easy saunter through the trees bring you to a large rocky outcropping overlooking the town of Highlands. The sprawling view extends beyond the town toward distant mountains defining the Appalachian range. When you’ve enjoyed the view sufficiently, turn back and head to the junction, this time heading straight through to access Sunrise Rock.
Another quick meander through the woods pops out at a steeper (but safe) overlook, this time with more wilderness encompassing the view. The hills and mountains are a little more rugged here, offering a uniquely separate landscape than its counterpart. When ready, head back to the junction and follow the trail back down the same way you came up.
